The Place Of The Geek Is Under The Radar But This Does Not Mean That They Aren't Essential
It is a sadness that geeks are regarded as being in someway odd or unusual. Our culture is now at a moment where it relies almost wholly upon folks who would be portrayed as techies by those who consider themselves to be un-techie. And yet for everything from search engine optimisation to producing the most useful and complicated IT systems it is the army of geeks that turn them out. When you consider the least techie kinds such as armed forces personnel, their lives depend upon the incredibly clever weapons they use. The Apache helicopter for instance is made to identify and prioritise hundreds of targets in one go and can launch a missile that will sort out it's own point of ingress into the building it's been shot at. Systems built by the techies.

If somebody was a low level nerd, then working for an affordable SEO company would be perfect as a technical knowledge isn't essential but if you are highly skilled already but wanting to do more, then getting into software consultancy is the direction to go. But, concentrating on search engine optimisation as an immensely vital function, making the client's webpages visible to their potential buyers is the alternative between the company continuing or not. The upside a good affordable SEO company gives is that for a known budget, the links to the website can be displayed to unlimited visitors. Ad-word campaigns with a fixed daily budget have the embedded disadvantage that when the maximum limit is achieved, the link is no longer displayed and you still pay whether the visitor buys something on the webpages or not.
Having done, and still doing, software consultancy too, I can state with some certainty that it is far less pleasurable although the greatest fun bit is having completed the program, testing it and discovering the bits that don't work and changing them. That always is a pleasure notwithstanding the frequent annoyance when you can't understand why it is not doing what it's told to be as after a bit you just know that the fix is very simple and looking you in the face.
But the software consultancy I usually do now is advising small firms on the software they use in their companies and how they can get the best and up to date versions and updates. So many firms I have helped use ancient versions which aren't really up to the job, specifically when they pass files and data with clients, suppliers and other involved bodies as the day will arrive when they cannot access a file at all. Which can be humiliating at best, and hazardous at worst since there will be a stop on any work until the situation is remedied.
But the finest thing by country mile, is search engine optimisation just since it is such a crucial service and although it is a bit of a black art, it is actually straightforward and very enjoyable. And, as long as one keeps on being an affordable SEO company, the relationship with the client should be a long one as the work is continuous to get the client's pages at the summit of the search results and then keep it there. And because the nature of the job is dependanct on results then outlay can be regulated, and if required, extra pages can be added to the SEO portfolio.
The clients may be the sophisticated specimens known among the population, they could be the epitome of cool and sophistication, but it's the techies that keep them in situ but, happily they will be well out of the way, hidden but indispensible.
