We will be considering the best way to attract search engines such as MSN. Created from a project on basic SEO by SEO Web Design. There are two main areas that search engines think about when they're thinking about where to place you in the search rankings:
The first is the text that you have on your web page and how relevant that is to what people are searching for. These are the on-page factors and are covered in this article by SEO Web Design.
The second thing the search engines look at is how popular your site is on the internet. How many links are coming in to your page from the rest of the web? The page rank of the page linking to you is important? How relevant is the link text when compared to the text found on the page being linked to? These are external settings that have a big effect on search results. Not covered here, but covered in depth later.
Off-page factors are more important than the on-page factors in determining your position in the search results, but on-page factors are still important and both have to work together to get the best results from Google or any of the search engines.
Below are what SEO London consider to be the main 5 critically essential on-the-page search engine optimization factors
1. Title
2. Keywords
3. Description
4. H1 Heading
5. Main Body text of the page
Title
This is a hidden field (a meta field), it should be limited to 10 words and this appears in the top 'tab' of the browser. Put your most important terms here and place them in a simple order that is easy to read.
Keywords
This is a hidden field. All of the important phrases for the website should be included. Copy the title phrases and all derivatives. The least important of the meta fields, just try to copy the title words.
Description
A hidden field, which is picked up by Google and shown on the search page when anyone types in a search. Note the description should be a couple of English sentences but they must contain all the words in the Title.
H1 Heading
This is a type of heading on the main text of the page. These tags represent key headings. The Heading text is almost as important as the title and should include all of the phrases found there.
Main body text of the page
There should be at least 400 words on the page (ideally). Inside the main text the words that were used in the title should appear in the first fifty words and then regularly within the text in normal English sentences. Key phrases should appear often! Use a 4% guide to the spread of the main keywords on the web page.
In the next article we will look at Off-Page factors for SEO success.
